Apoptosis, 2024

Writing

I had the wonderful chance to premiere my play Apoptosis at the 2024 Winnipeg Fringe Festival, and Parasocial at the 2025 Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Also, during my last year at Brandon University I took the I took Advanced Seminar in Creative Writing and finished a full length play titled FWB.

Directing

In 2024/25 I received my first contract to direct the All Dentist Musical production of Chicago. I have also directed two of my own original works, Apoptosis and Parasocial. My first directorial experience was directing a production of Peter/Wendy when I resided in Brandon, MB.

Lighting

As the technician at The Gargoyle Theatre, I have assisted in the lighting design of several shows and have had the privilege of designing several more. I love how lights can be so overlooked yet evoke such strong emotions from the audience without them knowing it.

Performing

A majority of my theatrical work lays behind the curtain these days, but my love of performing will always play a key role in my day to day life. Being the Manitoba representative for Musical Theatre at the 2019 National Music Festival will forever be a highlight for me.

I was extremely grateful to have been a part of the 2024/2025 cohort of Creative Manitoba’s Professional Mentorship Program, wherein I had the amazing opportunity to work with Ellen Peterson on the creation of a new work.

I had a public reading of Parasocial at The Gargoyle Theatre in April, where I had the chance to listen to feedback from the community before jumping into rehearsals for this show to make its debut at the 2025 Winnipeg Fringe Festival.

As someone who has witnessed a swatting happen during a livestream, and had a public figure I looked up to taken too soon from this world because a stalker took her life during a meet and greet, this show was written from a very personal place.

I am so glad that audiences enjoyed the show and took something away from each performance.

Parasocial follows two popular video game streamers, Mia and Zach, as they navigate the ups and downs of streaming life. In an attempt to amass more followers, Mia joins Zach’s stream but soon begins to notice unsettling behaviour from a seemingly devoted fan. Someone who acts like they know her, comments on her personal life, and even learns where she works. At first, she brushes it off as harmless, but the obsession deepens and the stalker’s actions grow more intrusive.

Parasocial explores online privacy, vulnerability and the dark side of being an internet personality, highlighting how the blurred lines between public persona and personal life can have devastating consequences.

of or relating to the connection or imagined connection between a regular person and a fictional character, celebrity, or other public figure: Fans naturally project their values into parasocial relationships, but they are bound to be disappointed one day when their idols aren't who they’ve built them up to be.

    • As a gamer mom who attended with my teen gamer girls, this show resonated with all of us. The messaging here is very relevant to the current landscape of online gaming. That said, you don’t need to be a gamer here to appreciate and echo the message. Online privacy and understanding the risks with sharing personal informal no matter how trivial is very important. Most especially for our youth who have grown up with the internet being a regular part of their daily lives. Highly recommend this show. Writer and actors all did a phenomenal job.

    • A really good show! Both of the performers were fantastic! The story was nice modern tale with a modern message which was brought to life elegantly. Highly recommend.

      - Liam

    • A compelling piece of theatre for the modern age! I loved the journey these performers took me on, supported impeccably by audio/visual magic. A beautifully designed, well written & poignant piece.

      - Allison

    • Another great play by Rebecca Driedger! A very well written portrayal of the dangers of being a public figure online with very relevant commentary. The actors were amazing and had great on-stage chemistry. The graphics were also amazing!

      - Danica

    • The performances are great, both actors bring depth and realism to their roles, with impeccable timing that heightens the tension throughout. Their chemistry feels natural, making the play’s emotional shifts all the more impactful.

A thought provoking piece, Parasocial powerfully explores the blurred lines between public and private life in the digital age.

      - Matt

    • The show had a great story line that touches upon the dangers of the streaming world – also the actors really sold the message. I am not a gamer or someone that engages with streaming but it had me hooked!

      - Jude

    • I love video games so this was a great choice for me. It was also wonderful for my friend who doesn’t game at all. It doesn’t feel like it is written exclusively for a gamer audience, which made it super accessible.
A good story and a great message, will definitely try to see again!

Chicago

It has been an absolute pleasure directing this cast and crew, and a dream come true to be a part of this production. As Velma sings, “but I simply cannot do it alone,” I also couldn’t have directed this show without the help of Phil Corrin’s musical knowledge, Tyler Leighton’s dance experience, and the help and support from Keira Jordan, Jonalyn Basconcillo, and Paul Longtin. We couldn’t have done any of this without you, our audience, so thank you for attending our show and supporting All-Dentist Musical!

Set against the backdrop of a prohibition-era Chicago, Chicago is a tale of ambition, corruption, and the lengths people will go to for fame, power, and freedom. With jazz music, showstopping dance numbers and a cynical tone, there is a reason this show has been performed over and over again since 1975.

Chicago is about spectacle, but it’s also about the choices we make in a world where power and perception often win out over truth and justice. Through the characters’ stories, we invite you to reflect on the complexity of fame, morality, and the price of our dreams.

In 2024 I flew to Toronto to see a touring production of SIX: The Musical, only to be asked months later if I would be interested in being a musical director for a teen production of the show here in Winnipeg.

I jumped at the chance to add ‘music director’ to my resume, and to work with some super talented girls early in their theatrical/musical careers.

APOPTOSIS

First written in 2017/18, I resurfaced Apoptosis to finally bring it to life on stage during the 2024 Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. Expanding on the original 15 minutes, the show now runs at 45 minutes.

It is a one-act drama about a young couple involved in a car accident who must face the consequences of their choices during the past year.

Follow the gripping journey of Sam and John as they navigate the aftermath of a devastating car accident, where the spectre of losing each other looms large. As Sam grapples with the terrifying possibility of life without her husband, John's struggle to recover intertwines with the haunting echoes of a recent miscarriage, pushing them both to the brink of despair. With emotions running high and the stakes higher than ever, Apoptosis ignites a thrilling exploration of love's endurance and the power of human resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity.

  • The death of cells which occurs as a normal and controlled part of an organism's growth or development.

  • APOPTOSIS is defined as ‘a genetically directed process of cell self-destruction.’

A very medical term, I chose this to highlight the essence of this one-act drama. Sometimes, cells need to die for healthy growth, and sometimes, relationships need to reach their breaking point before they learn whether to come together, or fall apart.
